How to Make Money With A Digital Camera

Most people buy a camera just as a hobby or to capture precious moments; they never imagine actually making a living off of it. I mean, you have to be a professional to do that, right?

Not necessarily…

One of the easiest ways to get started selling your work is stock photography. Stock photo sites are like the Wal-mart of the photo world. They have pictures of every shape and size available to buy to anyone who has a computer. They display and sell your pictures (often for a low, low price) and you get a cut for every copy they sell. You still own the picture, people just buy the rights to use it. And, in most cases, you can sell the rights to an unlimited number of people. Different sites have different procedures, so you’ll have to do a bit of research to find the site(s) that are best for you. Your choice will really depend on your equipment, skill level, and personal preferences.

Why not start your own photo studio? You don’t need fancy equipment or a big space to get started. Just start small and work your way up. You can start by taking pictures for friends or coworkers in your spare time. Offer to take their child’s first photo or even their senior pictures. If you don’t have room for a studio, you can set up a session outside, in your client’s house, or at a scenic area in your town. Not only will you get some money to buy better equipment, they’ll often give you referrals and you’ll have pictures for your portfolio.

Don’t want to set up in a studio? You can take pictures at weddings, graduations, and other memorable life events. You can get started by researching in books, shadowing a professional photographer, or by acting as a “back up” photographer at one of your friends important events.

It seems anymore that anywhere that develops film now makes products with your pictures on them. If you do a little searching online, you can find places to put your pictures on post cards, blankets, t-shirts, mugs, mouse pads, and pretty much anything else you can think to fit a photo on at decent prices. You can sell these products on your own personal website (but you’ll have to learn how to get traffic), on eBay, or even market them to local stores in your area. If you have some unique shots of local landmarks, why not go to your local hotels and ask them to carry them in their stores?

The best way to find opportunities to make money with a camera is to open your eyes. If you look around, you’ll find a lot of pictures around you: on the street, in stores, and online. Every one of those pictures had to be taken by someone and they were probably paid to take it. Websites, eBay sellers, real estate magazines, insurance companies and newspapers all need people to take pictures. If you don’t know where to get started in one of these areas, call them up and ask. They may ask for samples, or you may be able to get the name of the agency they get pictures from. Either way, you’re likely to get a lead to what is likely a unique opportunity for you to profit.

What method you use to make money really depends on how much you want to make. If you’re looking to make a living, setting up a portrait studio or becoming a wedding photographer are both reasonable options. Someone looking to make some extra cash for new equipment could probably get my just selling on stock sites.

Just remember that you get out what you put in. If you don’t learn to take good pictures, you probably won’t be able to sell them. It takes time, studying and hard work to be a successful photographer.
